Saint Hubert

Saint Hubert and Saint Roch A compelling vision on Good Friday of a majestic stag with a strong crucifix jutting from the base of its antlers transforms the pleasure seeking Hubert from an avid hunter and archer of great privilege and honor to a devoted servant of God. Born in Maastricht, Saint Hubert, denounces his military rank, entitlements and wealth to become a priest and a bishop converting many persons living in dangerous areas to the faith. His miracles include curing someone stricken with rabies through the sign of the cross.

Born in 656, Saint Hubert was honored in the Middle Ages as the patron of huntsman and dogs, with many military organizations bearing his name.

Saint Roch

Saint Roch embraced a life of service to the sick, abandoning his wealth and position, intent on assisting other who suffered from the plague. As a mendicant pilgrim he traveled to Rome miraculously curing the scourge with a sign of the cross. Once infected himself, he retreated to the woods, cared for by a maverick dog who stole from his master, Gothard’s, table to nourish his new friend. Eventually the master and dog nursed Saint Roch to health.

Unfortunately, when returning home to Montpellier France where he was born in 1293, his impoverished appearance mistakenly identifies him as spy for which he is imprisoned and eventually dies. A birthmark on his chest resembling a cross reveals his identity. He continued to be venerated as a miraculous healer of the plague and his initials VSR (Viva Saint Roch), carved above doors in Europe served as protection. He is the patron of those who suffer from disease and dog lovers.
